Naha Hari Dragon Boat Race
Naha Hari is the largest dragon boat race event that takes place in Okinawa every year. Hari are traditional fisherman festivals to pray for an abundant catch. Typically the race is held on May 4 to mark the beginning of Okinawa's summer season. In addition to boat races, spectators are entertained by traditional shows and fireworks. |

Arts and Crafts
Okinawan culture has influences of Chinese, Thai, and the surrounding islands in the Pacific Ocean. These customs can be seen in the pottery, textiles, and glass making. Karate, a mixture of Chinese kung fu and martial arts, is a famous Okinawan custom. Musical instruments that resemble a banjo called a sanshin are made from imported snake skins. |
